Salon Xia Finds a New Home in the Pasadena Playhouse Village

Salon Xia now resides in the upscale Andalucia Complex in the heart of the Pasadena Playhouse Village. After seventeen years at its former location, Salon Xia’s owner, Mark felt it was time for a change. “What initially attracted me to this property is all the openness of the space. All the windows and the beautiful natural light that we get here throughout the course of the day really drew me in.”

Salon Xia collaborated with local architect, Clay Holden, on creating the welcoming loft-like interior. When building the salon from the ground up, the twenty-five plus years of salon experience provided an understanding of what works and what doesn’t and allowed precision in fine-tuning every detail to ensure each client has the perfect, modern salon experience.

Mark Mayner and Claudia Velasco are excited to announce the new location of Salon Xia, now residing in the upscale Andalucia Complex in the heart of the Pasadena Playhouse District. After seventeen years at its former location, Mark felt it was time for a change. “What initially attracted me to this property,” Mark explains, “is all the openness of the space. All the windows and the beautiful nature light that we get here throughout the course of the day. It drew me in.”

While the form of the new location inspired Mark, Claudia, as co-owner, has brought her insight for function. Together they have used their combined knowledge of over twenty-five years in the industry to collaborate with local architect, Clay Holden, on creating Salon Xia’s welcoming, loft-like interior. Claudia points out, “Because we were lucky enough to build the salon from the ground up, we were able to use our understanding of what works and what doesn’t in order to fine-tune every detail, ensuring our clients have the perfect, modern, salon experience.”

Such details include upgrades to the latest heat processor, and to new, wall-mounted, infrared hair dryers, which cut drying time in half and are gentler on clients’ hair. They thoughtfully planned everything from the placement of the shampoo station to making the stylists’ stations uncluttered and ergonomic, each one placed with enough distance between to maintain a sense of privacy in the communal work environment. There are forty-five underground parking spots at no cost to the customer, with the entrance on Union. Covering the east wall of the interior is a stunning photographic mural of the Arroyo Seco Bridge, taken by local So Cal photographer Brett Stanley. The result, a new feel for Salon Xia that encompasses current urban trends while retaining the traditional elements of Pasadena.

Along with Mark’s former team of stylists, three new additional stylists have recently joined them. Cristina Colon is a formal hair styling and cutting specialist, Thalia Hernandez, a color specialist, and CeCe Eby, a color specialist with an emphasis on Balayage and highlighting techniques. Mark offers training in the latest trends and cutting edge techniques for his stylists’ continuing education. So far this year they have had a class in the Brazilian Blowout, with advanced color and advanced formal styling education coming up on the calendar.

Mark and Claudia love being part of the visibility and vibrancy of the Playhouse District. They truly have found their new home where they are happy to fill the niche of upscale salon in the neighborhood. Looking forward, they see the salon being an active part of the community. Mark envisions Salon Xia hosting future cultural events, such as an art walk festival in the alleyway of The Andalucia, and hopes to get other local businesses involved, too.
